I spent part of my toddler-free day today (Tuesday is preschool!) perusing this Modesty Survey, which I first learned about on one of my favorite blogs, Girl Talk. Some of the answers were surprising to me, but I appreciated the thorough questions and the overall intention of the survey. Check it out and see what you think. Here's some info from their site:
TheRebelution.com has launched the results of their massive Modesty Survey. Over 1,600 Christian guys have answered questions on everything from glitter lotion and lip gloss to swimsuits and skirts! It's everything girls have ever wanted to ask guys about modesty, but were afraid to ask. Most importantly, the survey is presented as a resource to help Christian girls (and guys), not a list of legalistic rules, and it is accompanied by the Modesty Survey Petition, which encourages young women to focus on the heart, not the hemline, to honor their parents, etc.
The results were released on St. Valentine's Day as a gift from 1,600 Christian guys to all Christian girls -- and now the survey is being endorsed by people like CJ Mahaney (Sovereign Grace Ministries) and Shannon Ethridge ("Every Woman's Battle")!

I don't think women, including me, will ever really understand what goes on inside a man's visually-stimulated mind, but I think this project will help its readers balance personal expression in dress with helping guys stay away from temptation. Hmm... interesting survey. This is maybe a sensitive topic for me since I attended a private school that had rules for girls like, "No shirts below the clavicle."
I noticed that 25% of respondents thought a one-piece, non-halter top swimsuit was immodest. My question, what is a girl supposed to wear then? I've had to swim in shorts and a t-shirt at various camps I went too, and that is just not very comfortable.
Personally, I thought the way they worded some of those questions, "xxx is immodest" would make a person answer agree just because that might have been in their rulebook growing up.
I think the intent of the survey is honorable, and as women we should be informed and careful about what we choose to wear...
I think I might have to chat about this some more with guys I know.
Hey, Gudie...I think I had a somewhat similar reaction to some of the questions. So my question is, are they too sensitive or do we not understand the struggle? I think there has to be a balance.
On the swimsuit thing, I think that the majority of guys said a 1-piece suit was fine, but they were anti-halter suit and anti-bikini. Some of them did say that girls should wear Tshirts and shorts, but I think that's overkill. :-) I think this survey really got my attention b/c of Delaney and my desire to teach her modesty without making her feel like a nun.

Hmm...I actually had to stop reading it because it made my blood boil. I'm not supposed to reach into my shirt to adjust my bra strap because it causes most men to stumble? No problem; I just won't wear one - no adjusting needed!
I'm only kidding. I guess I'm just bitter. If men want to make stylish, but modest, clothes that fit my 5'0" 110lb frame, then I would be glad to wear more "modest" clothing. Until then, sorry, but my underwear are going to show once in awhile!
